Static and Dynamic VLANs VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks) permit segmentation of a network independently of its physical structure, and the macmon vlan-manager offers a simple and secure method to implement and operate various VLAN concepts. Unauthorized or unknown devices detected in the network by macmon may be switched to quarantine- or visitor VLANs. A switch port which has been thus deviated is re-assigned to its previous VLAN status by macmon as soon as the device in question is disconnected. Owing to the flexible configuration of rules, the measures to be taken by macmon may be restricted to cover only certain switches, network segments or areas. This permits a device, e.g. with Visitor status, to be associated with a Visitor-VLAN from within specified conference rooms, and blocked from accessing the network from anywhere else on the premises. macmon vlan-manager allows for flexible and simple implementation of such a concept.

Surveilance of Static VLANs

Not only does macmon prevent unauthorized devices from accessing the network, but also internal devices may be restricted to specific VLANs. macmon triggers a wrong_vlan event every time a device attempts to connect to a VLAN it is not entitled to access. Reactions to events can be flexibly configured via rules: beginning with a simple notification, to moving the device to a predefined visitor-LAN or even to blocking any affected ports.

Dynamic VLANs (Layer-2-VLANs)

Dynamic Layer-2-VLANs assign devices to pertinent VLANs or network segments according to each device´s MAC address. This permits users to connect to the network from anywhere on the premises and be automatically routed to the VLANs he is authorized to access. No re-configuration is thus required, e.g. after relocating office.

The implementation of such a concept is achieved through macmon vlan-managers WEB-GUI. The administration of macmon is further greatly simplified by assigning VLANs to devices via device groups.
