Green - IT at the workplace
According to an investigation by DBResearch, information- and communication technology is responsible for 2% of CO2 emission worldwide. This is about the same amount as that emitted by all aviation traffic. In british households the power consumption share attributable to information- and communication devices has doubled within the last 5 years. In Germany, the figure is 10% of overall power consumption. It is reasonable to assume that IT- and communication devices will be responsible for 50% of total household power consumption by  the year 2020.

According to the Fraunhofer Instituts für System- und Innovationsforschung (ISI), 55,4 million Terawatthours (TWh) of electric power were consumed by  the information- and communication sector in 2007, corresponding 33 million tons of CO2 or to 10,5 % of all power consumtion  in Germany. This high energy consumption accelerates climate change, and has contributed to mikado soft´s decision, to develop energy reducing-technology.

Worldwide, the expenditure to operate data centers is currently rising at 8 times the rate of that for hardware, thus constituting the largest share in  IT budgets. According to optimistic estimations, this energy consumption may be reduced by half, if users could be made aware of their role regarding energy-saving behavior, supported by the widespread introduction of energy-efficient technology

Currently,  energy-saving efforts focus on Data-Center optimizing, but measures dedicated to the workplace can contribute a significant share towards reducing the power consumtion of the IT-infrastructure and reduce operational cost. macmon energy,  mikado soft´s tool in the wider context of its macmon system family, incorporate an energy management function to monitor and regulate power consumption in workplace PC environments.
